This castle sheltered King Charles I on his journey from Carisbrooke to London where he met his death. Built originally by Henry VIII to defend England from across the Channel, it was garrisoned for almost 400 years, and is now a well-known landmark for those using the Solent. The castle is now administered by English Heritage, and there is a cafe, to which access can be gained not only by walking along the improved spit, but also by ferry from Keyhaven.
