FROM SWEDEN AND ALBANIA TO MILFORD-on-SEA VIA UPMINSTER David Hellsten was born in Sweden and from an early age his two main interests were his faith and languages. This combination gave him a taste for exploring the world to find new languages and a desire to share his faith, which briefly explains the interesting route by which he came to be the new pastor at the Baptist Church in Milford. It was during David’s trip to the 1988 Baptist Youth World Conference that he first felt the desire to be involved in evangelism, and he started going on summer campaigns abroad. In 1991 he first heard about Albania opening up, and was moved by their thirst for the Good News; this led to several short evangelistic visits to the country, organised by OM (Operation Mobilisation). When he finished at Bible College in 1993, having been praying that God would inspire him to where he should go and what he should do, the call to go to Albania was increasingly strong so David went to serve there as a full-time missionary, first with OM and then with the Swedish Baptist Union. There he met his wife, Annette from Upminster, a place he had never been to. As he commented, you never know how God arranges things to fulfil his will. We really have no choice but to go along in trust! After 13 years in Albania working hard in the mission field, Annette’s father died and they decided it was perhaps time to return to England. Annette’s mother was now on her own, and they wanted to be closer to her. Although Annette’s mother did not seem ill, apart from suffering the usual pains of arthritis, some months later she had to go into hospital and there quite unexpectedly she came to the end of her life. David and Annette then started looking for somewhere in England to carry on with the work of spreading the Gospel, which is how they have come to live in Milford-on-Sea. Until there is space in Milford primary school, Simeon is being home-taught by his mother, a qualified teacher, and Lara is still studying while waiting to start senior school at Priestlands in September where there is a place waiting for her. David and Annette are keen that both children should be at school as near as possible to Milford so that they could get truly involved in their new community. They have already made a start by joining activities here, including Cubs and Guides. In the meantime, Milford-on-Sea Online wish David, Annette, Lara and Simeon all happiness as they join our Milford community and we feel sure that God bless them with his usual and prodigal generosity.
