News from December 1999 to October 1999 News from week ending 31st December 1999 New Clock to mark Millennium! At the modest cost of £2,000
(compared to a Rolex watch) our new clock should be ticking its way to the
Millennium on the front of estate agents Collins & Butler opposite the
Smugglers' Inn in the High Street. Long may its tick
One of the pleasures of Spring in past years would have been a drive in the sunshine to the Ornamental Drive at Rhinefield. Sadly, this year, the lovely rhododendrons of former years have been condemned as not being of English origin and as such are being uprooted to make way for indigenous species. One can only hope the Heritage Bug will not spread to kitchens next, outlawing modern equipment and returning to the Royal Chef Alfred's mode of cooking.
Milford-on-Sea is to have a millennium decorative stamp - cost 25 pence - to raise money towards financing the Millennium Hall. It is not known yet when these will be on sale, but they will make your envelopes look much prettier when you pay your bills!
Hurst Castle is to become the centre of an art exhibition with a difference at Easter next year. Seven artists, based in Cardiff, will be transforming it with life-size soldiers, an interactive dungeon and other amusing works of art as well as using ideas of a more contemplative nature. Something to amuse us as well as the grockles! It should be something to behold.....
News
from week ending 25th December
Mr. John Simmons (Milford-On-Sea Parish Council) was disappointed that the Churches and the school appeared to have no interest in Milford Village Design, 30 groups were asked for their opinions on future development and although half originally expressed support only 9 of the original 30 groups responded. The survey represents the views of only 6% of local residents and they do not want modern buildings or additional flats. They were very happy with The Green, the surrounding shops and the village atmosphere.
Milford School Fire, Milford-On-Sea Primary School lost materials including paints when the pre-school building suffered a fire as a result of an electrical fault, both New Milton and Lymington Fire Brigades were there and everything was under control within 90 minutes. The good news is that no one was injured.
Lymington Times reports that local airports are booming, let us hope they do not boom too loudly....
News from week ending 19th December
Hurst Castle Cafe was broken into last
Saturday night and on Wednesday burglars attempted to break into a house
in Deans Court. Make sure your property is well locked over the Christmas
period!
Desmond Swayne MP opened The Christmas Fayre in aid of Kosovo and Turkish victims of the recent tragedies at the Westover Hall Hotel last week. The Fayre run by Ghislaine Campbell has so far raised about £1,300. The figures are not yet finalised but we will report as soon as they are to hand. The Doves were a huge success - literally! Hopeful doves fluttering around the windows flew away terrified!
This week footsore members of the Churches of Milford-on-Sea have delivered over 3,000 copies of St. Luke's Gospel in a beautifully presented edition as a momento of the Millennium. It is hoped that this will give pleasure to all who receive it as a reminder of why we date our years in such a way we have reached 2000 AD...
Tony's newsagents was closed on Sunday morning after a burglary on Saturday night. You may remember when Pete's shop was done a few weeks ago we asked you to be vigilant if offered any cheap cigarettes or chocolates. Can you do the same again? It is not clear from the notice in the window whether the shop is closed for ever. The village would be the poorer if that is the case. We do offer our sympathy after
such a miserable incident. News from week ending 11th December Those who fall into the categories of being smokers and in police cells will be relieved to know that they will be allowed to light up while being detained. A plan by Hampshire Police to ban all smoking inside police stations was shelved following the decision that passive smoking was likely to be less dangerous than than depriving smokers, already under stress, from their cigarettes.....
A small fire at the Smugglers' Inn was caught early last Sunday morning and firemen, called to the scene just after 4.00 am, put the fire out. The early call was a lucky break, since no one was on the premises at the time, and things could have been much worse. Investigations into the cause of the fire have been carried out but it was suspected the blaze started in the kitchens.
News from week ending 4th December You may have noticed we have
been off-line for a couple of days. Big Snippet!
Have you seen the Snow Queen doing her shopping in Milford Dairies? To be truthful, she's not actually
buying anything, but her job is to lure you to the Christmas
Fayre. at the Westover
Hall Hotel on 3rd and 4th December from 10 am to 8 pm.
News from week ending 27th November Newcomers-to-Milford Supper
How many of you saw our Freda of British Legion fame gracing our television screens last Thursday? We didn't know that Freda Cheyney also worked raising money for Guide Dogs for the Blind! Although that society has been named as having enormous reserves to-day, their annual income from giving has fallen sharply and is no longer enough to run the charity. They aim to try to reverse this situation over the next five years.
We were very sorry to learn
of the burglary which removed £5,000 of stock in chocolates and cigarettes from
Pete's News last Monday night. Our sympathies are with Pete who has worked
so hard to make his business a success, and if any amazingly cheap offers of
cigarettes and chocolate come your way, put two and two together and contact the
police.
Mrs. Doris Ashton-Poole died at the wheel of her car while on the way to WI rehearsals for the Christmas Party. She was a warm and friendly member of the community who will be much missed, and given her nature, she would have been relieved and delighted that the manner of her passing did not injure anyone else. We offer our condolences to her relatives and friends. News from week ending 20th November On Friday and Saturday 12th & 13th November the annual Poppy Appeal Money Trail wound its way - not along the pavement but to and fro along a table! This year, yet again (!), the Ladies' Section won. They collected £138.53, winning by a short head from the men, who staggered home with £137.75! The Milford on Sea Village Community Committee held its AGM in the Guide Hut at 7.30 pm on Tuesday, 9th November. Everyone was invited and those who went had a really exciting evening as a cheque for £500 was presented to Nicky Troke, who has undergone the sort of trauma over the last couple of years which would send most of us round the bend. Buy the local paper for details. The evening didn't end there: Nicky then went for a drink with the Community Committee, when she was presented with a brand new car by Bob Furnell. The car, a Daihatsu 900 cc, was acquired by the matching of the Community Committee's cheque with a similar amount from Milford Club. Together with an additional £750 from the Burry Charitable Trust, the purchase was made possible by the generosity of Paul Marden, managing director of Sewards in Highcliffe, who reduced by price of the car by £1,000. There is a small balance outstanding, and Richard Millerby can be contacted during the day at 01590 645201. Richard is collecting a list of people who are willing to take part in this charitable venture to the tune of £1 a week until this is cleared. What a splendid idea! Go for it!
News from week ending 13th November The most exciting news of the week must be the brilliant Millennium idea presented by the Ordnance Survey Office. They have been photographing the whole country so viewers to the Internet will be able to see their houses photographed from the air, and to zoom into it to get better detail. It will start (Millennium Bugs permitting!) on 1st January 2000. The pictures will be downloadable and printed by visitors to the site.
News from week ending 6th November Before we go anywhere today I must explain the vagaries of the whole business of putting up a website: I sit here at my keyboard putting the thing together, and when it's all done, I click my mouse on 'Publish', whereupon it all goes up to the Web Hosts, who are in Scotland. It usually goes well, but from time to time we suffer from Scottish Blues. This is why I haven't been able to update my pages for the last few days, on top of which it has made it impossible to visit any pages within the site. Scottish Blues invariably occur at the week-end when I can do nothing about it. I can only apologise to our visitors and hope you will keep coming back anyway.
The annual lunch in aid of Save the
Children Fund is on Friday 5th
November in Contact Pat Blythe at 01590
645415. Earlier we featured a story about Ted Heasman who competed in the Great South Run at Portsmouth and raised £1,653.07 for the Alzheimer's Society, and this week in the Lymington Times (Advertiser & Times) there is a photograph of him presenting the cheque to Anne Mahony, chairman of the Lymington branch of Alzheimer. Anne, a Milford resident, appears on page 3, and all page 3 girls are worth a look!
Winter visitor? Have you ever considered having a donkey to stay for the winter? Beach donkeys need homes for the winter months, and are very easy to look after. They bring great pleasure with them and keep the field under control. They need somewhere to shelter from the rain, and straw bedding. Details and all help from: The Donkey Sanctuary, The whole country is covered and the donkeys travel to you on wheels!
What size champagne bottle will you be given? Or giving? Ordinary size? Answers: News from week ending 30th October New Forest Stallions Undergo Performance Test! The Continent expect all breeding stallions to be performance tested - it is mandatory there, and the New Forest Pony Breeding and Cattle Society is considering introducing the practice here. This year it was held in Brockenhurst. The stallions have to achieve satisfactory standards in various areas: dressage, show jumping and endurance ride across the Forest which must cover 8 miles in an hour and include a gallop as well as dealing with the sort of hazards so lavishly spread across the Forest. Anybody interested to know more about New
Forest ponies can contact the Society on
01425
402459.
News from week ending 23rd October Pop-In with a Difference! Last Thursday's coffee morning was run by the Mothers' Union in aid of their overseas fund, and with the help of some super buys raised a handsome £95 in aid of the charity. As a party of people from Milford-on-Sea was on a trip to Folkestone, several stalwarts were unable to be there, and all things considered, on a wet and muggy morning, the Mothers' Union was delighted with the result and would like to thank all those who braved the weather and supported their fund-raising.
Marcia Baker, well-known for her work with the younger children in the 'Rainbows' in Milford-on-Sea, is also a volunteer Tree Warden. If you see her apparently talking to trees in the village, she will actually be assessing their health and reporting to the local authority. Thanks to Marcia perhaps when the members of her Rainbow group are grown-up, they won't see as many dead and dying trees around as we are beginning to see at the moment. Has anybody noticed that enormous oak on the way
into Lymington at the corner of Belmore Road? A very sad sight indeed to
see the death of such a magnificent tree.
Alas, in the transition from top page to news we lost the details about getting
a mention in the Lymington Times. However, we did and the information was
completely correct apart from the fact that this computer has been operating for
less than three years. We had several responses but we'd like more!

TEARCRAFT and TRAIDCRAFT SALE
More help for Carers of Dementia Sufferers The AGM of the Lymington & District Alzheimer’s Society was held in St. Thomas’s Church Hall on 7th October. The speakers were Dr. Andy Barker, Consultant in Old Age Psychiatry, and John Gray, the Senior Community Psychiatric Nurse. They spoke about the new Becton Centre. This ex-nursing home in Becton Lane, Barton on Sea, will open early in February 2000 as the Dementia Centre for the over 65’s in the Western New Forest. There will be offices for the consultants, registrars, C.P.Ns etc. The twenty six beds will be used for assessment, respite and continuing care. The Day Hospital will take 10 people, 7 days a week and there will be 2 memory clinics. Local Telephone Helpline: 01590 679046. What a difference all this will make to the patients and their carers in this area!
Pumpkin Power
Oakhaven benefited
to the tune of £378 from Pumpkin Power in Milford on the first Sunday of
October. The annual battle between Milford and Everton ran the gamut of
emotions from joy to tears as the teams battled for supremacy. This year
Everton dosed its pumpkins with Viagra (so the rumour grows) which produced a
big improvement in total weight - from a tiny 715
lb last year to a relatively
huge 1,843
lb this
year. 2,720
lb Congratulations
to Milford, and weighty commiserations to Everton!
Millennium Hall Developments In connection with the Millennium Hall, the Chairman, Tony Willcox, has sent round to every household in Milford a questionnaire. It is hoped that our natural apathy will be overcome and that we will make a big effort to fill in the form and return it to the Parish Office at 2 Park Road. Just inside the door, on the left, you will see a box to put it in. While we are fortunate with our choice of venue for various functions in the village, there could be times when something more central could be an advantage. If there is a chance for some of Lottery Money to come our way we might as well try for it!
All the efforts made in Milford for the 1999 Poppy Appeal were crowned with success in that the contributions increased by 14.25%. Congratulations to all concerned, including the population who dug so deep into their pockets!
Death of Mrs. Mary Twiss Mrs. Mary Twiss, whose Memorial Service was held last week at All Saints' Church, leaves behind her a record of service to the community of several parts of the country, though particularly to Milford-on-Sea, where her GP husband, Dr. Eric Twiss practised for more than 30 years. A graduate of Liverpool University, she started working with a charitable venture in the East End of London, returning later to work with the Women's Police Patrol in Liverpool. She married her husband while he was serving with the Royal Air Force and lived for a while in Anglesey, where her two eldest children were born. Within six years they had all moved to Milford on Sea, where the arrival of their youngest child, Gillian completed the family. Love of music dominated her free time, and she was frequently called on to play the organ at All Saints' Church. She will be particularly missed at the Women's World Day of Prayer Services, where her musical skills carried the congregations through the hymn requirements suggested by women from many areas of the world responsible for devising the services each year.
Good news for music lovers is that one of Lymington's projects for the Millennium is to restore the Band Stand in the Bath Road recreation ground, alongside the river. So far Bands are queuing up with enthusiasm to make walking there a pleasure in the Summer.
Dear Visitors to Milford-on-Sea on the Web, The Webmaster is sorry that due to circumstances caused by technical gremlins in the system, updating of the site in the last few days has been impossible. We hope this hasn't spoiled your enjoyment. Incidentally, it would be lovely some time to find more mail. Do write and let us have some news from you! Enjoy the rest of the week.....Oh! Perhaps it was the prospect of Hallowe'en that stirred up the gremlins.....
