WOMEN'S WORLD DAY OF PRAYER

On the first day we could really believe Spring was on its way.  This year it was the turn of the Milford Baptist Church to host the service for the worldwide day of prayer, which this year was organised by the women of Cameroon in West Africa. It is an interesting country with a huge variety of outstandingly beautiful scenery but it is a very poor country.  Those who attended the Women's World Day of Prayer will be sad to learn of news which has percolated to the west from Cameroon that one of the markets where the 'buyem-sellem' ladies do much of the trade that goes on in the country, Tiko, was burnt down on Tuesday last.  To read about this fire which has been disastrous for about 800 families [ Click here ].

We were very fortunate this year to have Renée Alsandor, an elegant lady who wore a beautiful African dress with one of the head-dresses that women in England would love to know how to tie!  Renée is over in England from Houston, Texas, where she and their three children have joined her husband on a posting over to England.  She herself is taking a sabbatical from her normal work and concentrating on the family while she is in England.  She has an MA in mechanical engineering but works as an expert on intellectual copyright in that field.  At present she worships at the Baptist Church in Lymington.

The Baptists, led by Chris Steadman with support of the congregation, have been battling valiantly in the kitchen recently, what with the party organised for Eric and June Parker (see below) and the wonderful range of cakes and sandwiches which were available today for the tea after the service this afternoon.  They also led the service in the evening at St. Mary's, Everton, where there is always a service regardless of which of the Milford churches hosts the afternoon service for the WWDP.  This is done to make it easier for people who are in full-time work to attend the services which each are are designed by women of a different country.  Next year it will be put together by the women of Chile.  The evening service also entertains those who have come to Everton: on the posters it says 'Coffee/Tea and Biscuits' but that is almost always a far too modest  description!

MILFORD CONTINUES TO STRIVE FOR GASTRONOMIC HEIGHTS

Yet another restaurant has arrived to titillate the taste buds of Milford.  Formerly the much-loved and Rick-Stein-recommended village fishmongers Monks,  Michelin-trained David Wykes, with Stacey Crouch, have taken over the premises in order to convert the former shop.  After a great deal of hard work this has now been converted into a gourmet fish restaurant and a kitchen which will not only provide food for lunchers and diners but also space for would-be chefs as cooking courses are also going to be on offer.  The restaurant's name is Verveine.  On top of all that, guess what?  You will still be able to buy high-quality locally sourced sea-food for your own kitchen at Verveine, one of the very few places where it is still possible to buy fresh fish in the Forest area.

Anyone walking through the village will have noticed that almost every shop is showing posters advertising a Foodfest to eat our way through more edible delights starting on Easter Monday.  It all looks very exciting and will be a great curtain-raiser to the  delights of Milford as the new tourist season opens. Click below to read all the details to give yourself time to plan your week - maybe even invite friends to come and stay!

"HOW LONG?"
"WHAT? THAT LONG!"

While another very successful "'Newcomers' Supper" took place earlier this month, it is quite fun to think that the whole celebration to welcome all those people who have moved into Milford-on-Sea during the previous 12 months was the child of Pop-In, born in 1996, fourteen years ago.

This weekly Coffee Morning, where you can just talk, was a venture by all the churches in Milford to get together to add something to the social life of the village, something which would be particularly welcoming to people who retired to our wonderful village and needed to get to know people quickly.  The idea of the Pop-In was given a great reception and continues faithfully every Thursday.  If you haven't yet visited make a date between 10.30 am to Noon in The Village Hall. You may well be asking '. . .which is the Village Hall?  There are so many halls in Milford!'  That is true but the Village Hall must be the versatile one since it doubles as the Library when its entire appearance is transformed.  It is also used for card groups among other regular uses.  It is just opposite the HSBC bank in Park Road, so very handy to fit into your village shopping.

The original aim of the Pop-In, founded as a non-profit making group, was that any profits which came from the donations made by the coffee-drinkers and the biscuit-eaters would be given to Naomi House, the children's hospice in Sutton Scotney.  To date we have sent them £3,000.

A couple of years' later it was decided to expand the idea of the Pop-In to include a welcoming supper for newcomers to the village.  As well as supporting Naomi House from the donations, some of the profits now go to the Newcomers' Supper which adds so much to the way Milford works, as a community where people get to know each other quickly, help and welcome each other, so that everything runs smoothly.

The Pop-In, of course, is for everyone in Milford.  Do come and support it, make new friends, cement old ones and keep in touch with each other.  For further information or help with transport, ring Sonia Collyer on 643943.

See you there - Thursday at 10.30!

MORE MONEY PUMPED IN TO IMPROVE FLOODING IN MILFORD

While it would be lovely if the money would actually flood Milford with banks notes or gold coins,  the £60,000 involved is to replace the sheet pile flood defences on the Danestream.  If you know nothing about sheet piles apart from the ones lying  around waiting to be ironed, the picture will show what this is all about!  Look familiar, don't they?

The money to cover the cost of this improvement is part of a £700,000 grant which has been allocated to protect vulnerable areas across the entire New Forest.

ROAD CLOSURE IN MILFORD

Sea Road, for a 40m. stretch northwards from River Gardens, is to be closed from 8th February for a period of 6 months - or until the roadworks are completed - whichever is the shorter period.  It is thought that although that is the theory, the closure will be intermittent, on weekdays only with any period of closure not exceeding three days.  Reasonable facilities for access to adjacent premises will be afforded during times of closure. Any enquiries should be made to Herbert H, Drew and Son Ltd. Telephone 01425 614546  or direct calls to the Transportion Section of the NFDC on 02380 285904.

HAITIAN EARTHQUAKE

We make no apology for continuing this item of news: it is going to take years and years before this poor country has any chance of returning to a noraml life - and we are talking the sort of life lived by people whose leaders are not influenced by the power of local criminals - the sort of life Western European countries are, thank God, still able to live. . .

The Disaster Emergency Committee for the Haiti Earthquake Appeal and the funds it has been give will enable the coordinate rescue and reconstruction efforts by all the major charities in the UK and will help avoid wasteful overlapping of all attempts to restore some sort of reasonable life to the inhabitants of Haiti.

Even small amounts that we can give will enable the charities to go on helping people in Haiti long after the instant compassionate reaction has passed.  The Haitians are going to need help for many years.  It's not a question of here today and forgotten tomorrow.

You can make a contribution on line or you can telephone them on 0370 60 60 900.  Further details on ways to donate can be found elsewhere on the internet (go to Google to find well-known and reputable charities) or just [ Click here ]

UPDATE FROM YOUR FRIENDLY LIBRARIAN

Our Milford Library is planning an exciting venture for people who find actually getting to the library themselves has become something of a problem.  The great idea is to provide transport once a month for a return trip to your home to the Library.  There will time to choose some books, enjoy a chat over a cuppa something delicious and the chance to make new friends who share you interest in reading.

Milford-on-Sea Library Club, perhaps operating regularly on a Wednesday, will be available for you and anyone else you know who may have similar difficulties in accessing the library.  You can ring the library on 01590 679585 for more details.  We at Milford-on-Sea Online will make sure any further developments appear on our pages.

GOVERNMENT PLANS TO CUT FORCES' POST OFFICE TO SAVE MONEY

A petition has been set up by the wife of a serving officer asking the Government to reconsider their current plan to do away with the BFPO services in mainland Europe.  So far Afghanistan has not been mentioned, but this concession which has for so many years been one of the few perks Britain offers its armed services when they are living abroad, will have other disadvantages than making friends and relatives use overseas rates of postage when sending necessities, gifts and home comforts.  [ Click here ] to read an open letter from Lord De L'Isle MBE DL and if you wish to support the petition, you will find the link to the official site at 10 Downing Street at the bottom of his letter.

In view of these days of financial turmoil the rates of exchange are moving up and down like a ride at Alton Towers.  You might find it helpful to have access to this site, which will give you the ability to check instantly what the UK£ is worth in all sorts of weird and wonderful currencies as well as the useful ones.  Those brave ones among you who shop on the internet are also likely to find it comes in very handy - but always bear in mind that the rates at the moment are changing hourly - or more often - and what you think you might be spending may not be the same as when the trader submits your details for payment.  Still it will give you a rough idea!

MOVIOLA TICKETS AVAILABLE FROM GWEN'S

Milford can now choose now whether to go out in the evening to the Moviola presentations, or to a matinée, since performances are now going to be held at 3.30pm and 7.30pm.  Bar and coffee will be available at both showings.  There will be a strict limit on a maximum of 70 tickets for each session to avoid the problem of heads and to allow more comfort to the audience as well as better access to vision.  New, comfier chairs are now making their appearance.

The hard-working people behind the scenes of our Community Centre and the promoters (and workers) behind Moviola -  which is run as a charity purely for the love of movies - ask you all to support this venture which is very important to the village. With petrol rising at its present rate, it will soon become a matter of serious consideration about whether you drive the extra miles to Bournemouth or Southampton for the big cinema experience.  Another £25,000 have found their way into the Community Centre's coffers from the Lottery as we enter Round 2 of the Community Buildings Programme.  To get ourselves a really great Centre is all down to us - we just need to make the effort!

METRIC EQUIVALENTS - AND VICE VERSA

A member of our staff was looking for a simple conversion table recently to try to cook a duck.  He had no idea how to cook it since the recipe he wanted to use was an older one, where the instructions are in Imperial weights.  For cooking times, temperatures etc. he needed to find out what to do.  Most tables on the internet seem to involve working out the maths, so we thought people might like an easy reference table, particularly as the geese are busy fattening themselves up for Christmas and it might be essential  - for some reason, at some point - to try to find out how long is a piece of string!  [ Click here ]

RENEWING YOUR VEHICLE LICENCE FROM YOUR OWN HOME

DVLA logo

This is a really efficient new service:  we have tested it and it works well.  When your Vehicle Licence arrives through the post it will be printed on a form V11, which you can see at the top right-hand corner.  Underneath will be a thing called a 'SORN'. the letter of which stand for Statutory Off Road Notification.  Armed with this number you will be able to telephone and order your licence or use the internet.  It will be delivered to you five days later.  One small hitch:  as every opportunity for anything to do with serving the public costs money, over and above all our taxes, there is a charge of £2.50 to use a debit/credit card.  This is just about worth the convenience of not having to go and queue up at a Post Office to renew your licence.  Renewal at a Post Office will be £112.75 for 6 months and £205.00 for a year.  How come the Government continues to insist that the rise in the cost of living is just a fraction over 2%?  Maybe they all went to school when the education in Mathematics in this country had sunk to an all time low!

Incidentally, Big Brother knows whether you have paid your insurance, and whether your car is liable to be MOT-ed, and if so, whether it has been done and on which date it is due.

LOCAL MAP FUN FOR MILFORD READERS

It's surprising how often things 'before your very eyes' get ignored.  On the border heading of this web site is the little green 'cushion' which doesn't often get used.  If you haven't done so, why not try today?

If you click if, you will see a street scene with a dark printed rectangle obscuring part of the picture.  Click on that to get rid of it and what do you see?  Our very own village green!  If you play with your mouse, you can move around the village, go and see your own house, try getting to Lymington or New Milton - in fact with patience you can probably get to Ayers Rock.  Have a go!  Like they say, you can go anywhere from the Milford web site. . .

NOW SOMETHING FOR CARERS

You never expect it but one day you may find yourself a carer.  There is a lot of help available so [ Click here ] for an excellent place to start.   This site is useful even to 'old hands' because things change - usually for the better - while you care.  See if you can find somewhere which will give you more help. As the main aim of the Government now is to enable people to stay in their own homes as long as possible, there's a chance it could be time for a good little exploration to see what is on offer.

NEW LIFE FOR OLD MOBILES

The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance is launching a new scheme for recycling dead mobile phones.  This is an extension of an already existing finance generating scheme which recycles empty computer cartridges, used clothing, stamps and shoes.  Anything between £6 and £25 can be received from mobiles no longer in use and it is anticipated that many thousands of pounds can be raised in this way.

All that needs doing is to remove the SIM card and send it off, without the charger, to:

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance
Freepost London 16281
London WC1N 3BR

Some people may be sentimentally attached to their old mobiles and be reluctant to dispose of them.  But if they do the little machines will be recycled for use in the developing world, where much business is done over the air on mobiles in places where office space is way out of reach.  This offers small traders the chance to make enough profit on their labour to keep a family well-fed and perhaps  pay school fees.  It also enables traders from small villages to tap in for information about average market prices for the products for the day.  Many small traders have no idea how much they should charge for their goods and are often seriously disadvantaged when it comes to getting the right price.

SILLY QUESTION - BUT DO YOU HAVE TIME TO SPARE?

As a result of the recent 'Who Cares' campaign, local volunteers contributed enough money to launch the 'Volunteer Sitting Service'. This will offer respite to those whose lives are dedicated in their homes to looking after people who need full time care.  Oakhaven will train volunteers who will then be enabled to give both patients and carer a much needed break, for up to four hours a week, in what is often a stressful and restrictive situation.  Volunteers will not be expected to offer medical or personal care.  The main hope is that the volunteers will be able to become visiting friends who can brighten the lives of those who are suffering by offering them a change, a different point of view and a chat to someone new.

If you feel you can offer your help in this new venture, ring Carole on 01590 613030.  Travel expenses and ongoing training and support will be given by Oakhaven.  [ Click here ] to explore Oakhaven.

GETTING CHEAP TICKETS FOR A TRAIN JOURNEY

Although The TrainLine doesn't seem to be the easiest way to buy train tickets on the internet, once you have discovered how it works you can spend a satisfying deal of time organising your trip.  One of the problems is finding out how to buy the cheaper tickets:   Here's how:

A recent correspondent has told us how she almost gave up using the service offered by our English train servers - click on the flashy train above - as she had failed miserably to find the much-vaunted 'cheap journeys'.  The secret, he tells us, is to stop worrying when the fare you want comes up and there are no little circles which relate to the proposed journey which you can click.   The only ones available seem to be the more expensive options.  Now, if you click on the cheapest one of those, you may then come to a link which suggests looking for even cheaper fares.  Look towards the top of the screen, and it is printed quite small, nothing too obvious, you understand?  We do have to make our profits, don't we?  However, if you get an option, they are usually wonderful!

There is a lot of chat about booking in advance but the best thing to do is to book with only a few days in hand, or even the very day.  The fares come down to something unbelievable!  It's worth practising to learn the system.  Click on the train above and find out!

To go hunting to buy your train tickets anywhere in the world,  [ Start here ]

Here's a generally helpful site if you're trying to get round the British Isles from Brockenhurst [ Click here ] or from New Milton [ Click here ].  They will also give you train arrival times.  Occasionally there are seasonal time changes, so to get an update, click on these connections.

WHEN YOU NEED MEDICAL HELP OUT OF HOURS. . .

The new system came into effect last week.  You either ring the normal number for your surgery, when you will be transferred, or you ring 0845 601 8803, when a Health Care Professional will discuss your problem, and with you, advise on the best treatment.  It's a bit like talking to NHS Direct but on a more localised basis.  We are particularly lucky in Milford because our nearest Primary Health Trust centre is in Lymington.  'Out of hours times' referred to are after 6.30 pm Monday to Friday, and before  8.00 am, and all over the weekend.

GIVE 'EM AN ARM OR A LEG - OR SOMETHING EVEN MORE USEFUL!

You may have noticed a good deal of publicity recently - and there will be more - about thinking of donating something of you to benefit others, in the event you have to say good-bye to this world.  It could mean you wouldn't have to be completely dead!

Seriously, a recent survey has shown that a majority of people are in favour of donating organs, but most either don't know how to set about it or they don't get round to doing it.  The National Donor Organ Register has now got itself organised on the internet, and if you click on the logo above you can not only go and find out all about it, but you can also get yourself registered.

Having looked at this site, it doesn't seem that that many people have got round to registering this year - why not add your name?  Everyone in our office has finally done it!
