MILFORD CARNIVAL IN THE CLEAR - WE HOPE!

While Lymington's Carnival plans are in complete disarray it should be OK for Milford.

We can resume what we were saying earlier because Milford, having been about to be ravaged by a storm, seems to have been reprieved and we can switch on our computer and continue with the publishing of www.milfordonsea.com.

Stricter rules about road closures for fun things like festivals and carnivals have been introduced by the NFDC and insurance regulations are getting so tight that poor old Joe Public is being denied the fun which has been available to citizens of this country for centuries and which is now being curtailed.  In fact, it seems that one of the 'happenings' which has aggravated this whole business is that a - well, we won't call him/her a gentleman/lady - a litigious individual was hit by a water bomb in the face and claimed damages.  That resulted in the termination of the Totton Carnival which died in 2004.

It does seem that Milford's Carnival will be able to go ahead - but read all about it in detail - [Click here],

ENTERTAINING TODAY?

Serve omelettes to lots of guests simultaneously:  This ingenious recipe reached us a couple of days ago and we'd like to share it with you! Very useful for camping or student life. . .

Omelette garnished with smoked salmon and served with a Caesar Salad

Ziploc Omelette

Write the name of your omelette on a Ziploc freezer bag with a marker pen.

Then crack two eggs into the bag.

Add what you want inside: cheese, ham, onion, green pepper, tomato, salsa etc.

Close the bag.

Shake it gently to mix it, prodding the mixture even more gently with your fingers.
(If you prefer you could beat the eggs a little before putting them in the bag.)

Let the excess air out of the bag and reseal.

Place bag into rolling, boiling water, for 13 minutes, use this countdown timer.

You can cook up to 6 – 8 bags in a large saucepan.

Open bag and the omelette will roll out easily.

Season then garnish and be prepared for everyone to be amazed!

ALL CHANGE IN MILFORD

One of Milford's long standing wonders retires on Monday as Chris Monk hands over his wonderful fish shop to Jonathan (formerly of Piccolo Mondo) prior to Jonathan's opening of a fish restaurant at the rear of the shop.  It is believed that Chris will keep a friendly eye over proceedings for the first six months.  Jonathan is busy with preparations to turn the late 'Maison' into a crêperie south of The Green and can be seen rushing here and there in the village in the process of producing two eateries in one year - though it's very difficult to physically pin him down and find out more of the current plans because he moves so fast!

The Britannia Thai Restaurant is now open - very elegant decor.  There will be a report on this restaurant in the near future. In spite of the lack of handrail, people seem to be able to manage the steps - even are well prepared to manage them in order to get to the food, which is delicious!  We have started sampling and immediately can recommend the Green Chicken Curry and the Chicken Satay - as time goes by and our staff try other dishes we will report on them too.

MILFORD GARDENERS' CLUB

How fast the years go by in Milford!  After the first very successful decade which has seen the club, founded by Jan England, go from strength to strength.  It  has now acquired the successful ethos of a very long-established group and much of what it does is firmly ensconced in the social calendar of Milford.  Among several forthcoming events, through which Milford Gardeners' Club raises  money for charity, the Annual Plant Fair takes place on Saturday 17th May.

To find out more about this exciting club, ring Sheila Collyer on 01590 641581.

TEST YOUR RECOGNITION SKILLS

This is almost an age give-away but it's an enjoyable trip as well as one which will amaze you with the cleverness of it all.  Click on the picture below to visit this fascinating site and muse on the skill of the maker and how much time it must have taken to produce!

NEW GRAVEL EXTRACTION PLANS

While some areas of Hampshire may shortly be able to breathe a sign of relief as current gravel extractions plans have been altered other may not be so lucky.

SEERA - the name a talking relief for people involved with yet another body supervising the environment - has decided it is likely to need rather less gravel for its current plans.  The name stands for South East England Regional Assembly whose job is to set mineral extraction targets.

Unfortunately, the reduction is not enough to affect plans for the prime sites, in which  both Ashley and Downton Manor Farms are included.  HERITAGE (Hordle and Everton Residents in Tandem Against Gravel Extraction) have said that they will continue to press for the removal of extraction plans in their sensitive tourist areas.  However, they are pleased to note some change in attitude by SEERA.

At this point we might wonder how all these acronyms will be translated by scholars in the dim distant future.  What would we have been able to understand of much history if we had been faced with mysterious words like SAWC, standing for Saxons against William the Conqueror?  There is one which makes people smile and which was never accepted.  Trade Unions have always been fans of acronyms but the Electrical, Electronic, Telecommunication and Plumbing Union refused to accept EETPU.  In 1992 this Union - thankfully we may suppose - merged with the AEEU.  This acronym stands for the Amalgamated Engineering  & Electrical Union.

SUPER-SENSITIVE TILLS AT WAITROSE

A recent correspondent to the A & T (known locally as the Lymington Times) pointed out that it is well worth checking your bill carefully when shopping at Waitrose in Lymington.  He said that one two or three occasion he has discovered that items are being charged twice.  He also said that when this problem was pointed out to the Store Manager refunds were also made - swiftly and with apologies, which of course they should be.  But if the shopper doesn't notice the error, he is the loser.  The explanation was that their new tills are too sensitive.

There's an old but true saying with legal connotations - Caveat Emptor - Buyer Beware.  So be careful and check ths bills - you don't need to add them up - just look out for double entries.  But it is sad to have to criticize a favourite store. . .

MOVIOLA TICKETS AVAILABLE FROM GWEN'S

Milford can now choose now whether to go out in the evening to the Moviola presentations, or to a matinée, since performances are now going to be held at 3.30pm and 7.30pm.  Bar and coffee will be available at both showings.  There will be a strict limit on a maximum of 70 tickets for each session to avoid the problem of heads and to allow more comfort to the audience as well as better access to vision.  New, comfier chairs are now making their appearance.

The hard-working people behind the scenes of our Community Centre and the promoters (and workers) behind Moviola -  which is run as a charity purely for the love of movies - ask you all to support this venture which is very important to the village. With petrol rising at its present rate, it will soon become a matter of serious consideration about whether you drive the extra miles to Bournemouth or Southampton for the big cinema experience.  Another £25,000 have found their way into the Community Centre's coffers from the Lottery as we enter Round 2 of the Community Buildings Programme.  To get ourselves a really great Centre is all down to us - we just need to make the effort!

SOMETHING TO PLAY WITH - FOR THE YOUNG. . .AND THE NOT SO YOUNG!

LYMINGTON'S CENTRE CINEMA

METRIC EQUIVALENTS - AND VICE VERSA

A member of our staff was looking for a simple conversion table recently to try to cook a duck.  He had no idea how to cook it since the recipe he wanted to use was an older one, where the instructions are in Imperial weights.  For cooking times, temperatures etc. he needed to find out what to do.  Most tables on the internet seem to involve working out the maths, so we thought people might like an easy reference table, particularly as the geese are busy fattening themselves up for Christmas and it might be essential  - for some reason, at some point - to try to find out how long is a piece of string!  [ Click here ]

To convert Fahrenheit temperatures to Celsius [ Click here ]

RENEWING YOUR VEHICLE LICENCE FROM YOUR OWN HOME

DVLA logo

This is a really efficient new service:  we have tested it and it works well.  When your Vehicle Licence arrives through the post it will be printed on a form V11, which you can see at the top right-hand corner.  Underneath will be a thing called a 'SORN'. the letter of which stand for Statutory Off Road Notification.  Armed with this number you will be able to telephone and order your licence or use the internet.  It will be delivered to you five days later.  One small hitch:  as every opportunity for anything to do with serving the public costs money, over and above all our taxes, there is a charge of £2.50 to use a debit/credit card.  This is just about worth the convenience of not having to go and queue up at a Post Office to renew your licence.  Renewal at a Post Office will be £112.75 for 6 months and £205.00 for a year.  How come the Government continues to insist that the rise in the cost of living is just a fraction over 2%?  Maybe they all went to school when the education in Mathematics in this country had sunk to an all time low!

Incidentally, Big Brother knows whether you have paid your insurance, and whether your car is liable to be MOT-ed, and if so, whether it has been done and on which date it is due.

LOCAL MAP FUN FOR MILFORD READERS

It's surprising how often things 'before your very eyes' get ignored.  On the border heading of this web site is the little green 'cushion' which doesn't often get used.  If you haven't done so, why not try today?

If you click if, you will see a street scene with a dark printed rectangle obscuring part of the picture.  Click on that to get rid of it and what do you see?  Our very own village green!  If you play with your mouse, you can move around the village, go and see your own house, try getting to Lymington or New Milton - in fact with patience you can probably get to Ayers Rock.  Have a go!  Like they say, you can go anywhere from the Milford web site. . .

NOW SOMETHING FOR CARERS

You never expect it but one day you may find yourself a carer.  There is a lot of help available so [ Click here ] for an excellent place to start.   This site is useful even to 'old hands' because things change - usually for the better - while you care.  See if you can find somewhere which will give you more help. As the main aim of the Government now is to enable people to stay in their own homes as long as possible, there's a chance it could be time for a good little exploration to see what is on offer.

SPECIALLY FOR THE WALKERS - NOW UPDATED FOR 2008

HAMPSHIRE CC PUT UP EMERGENCY HELP SITE

Hampshire County Council has a useful reference site in case of most emergencies.  To see it, [ Click here ]  There is. however, a slight problem:  it might be difficult to use a computer in the event of a power cut.  They suggest that anyone worried about an electrical emergency telephone should telephone 0845 7708090!  Milford-on-Sea Online suggests you go now, find an old-fashioned pencil or something else to write with, and put the number on a piece of paper which you should then stick to the bottom of your telephone - or the stand you keep it in!

RUNNING TO GOOD HEALTH

Let your mouse kiss one of the above and you'll be on the way to better health, better figure!

WE KNOW MILFORD WAS EXCLUDED FROM THE NATIONAL PARK. . .

NEW LIFE FOR OLD MOBILES

The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance is launching a new scheme for recycling dead mobile phones.  This is an extension of an already existing finance generating scheme which recycles empty computer cartridges, used clothing, stamps and shoes.  Anything between £6 and £25 can be received from mobiles no longer in use and it is anticipated that many thousands of pounds can be raised in this way.

All that needs doing is to remove the SIM card and send it off, without the charger, to:

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance
Freepost London 16281
London WC1N 3BR

Some people may be sentimentally attached to their old mobiles and be reluctant to dispose of them.  But if they do the little machines will be recycled for use in the developing world, where much business is done over the air on mobiles in places where office space is way out of reach.  This offers small traders the chance to make enough profit on their labour to keep a family well-fed and perhaps  pay school fees.  It also enables traders from small villages to tap in for information about average market prices for the products for the day.  Many small traders have no idea how much they should charge for their goods and are often seriously disadvantaged when it comes to getting the right price.

SILLY QUESTION - BUT DO YOU HAVE TIME TO SPARE?

As a result of the recent 'Who Cares' campaign, local volunteers contributed enough money to launch the 'Volunteer Sitting Service'. This will offer respite to those whose lives are dedicated in their homes to looking after people who need full time care.  Oakhaven will train volunteers who will then be enabled to give both patients and carer a much needed break, for up to four hours a week, in what is often a stressful and restrictive situation.  Volunteers will not be expected to offer medical or personal care.  The main hope is that the volunteers will be able to become visiting friends who can brighten the lives of those who are suffering by offering them a change, a different point of view and a chat to someone new.

If you feel you can offer your help in this new venture, ring Carole on 01590 613030.  Travel expenses and ongoing training and support will be given by Oakhaven.  [ Click here ] to explore Oakhaven.

GETTING CHEAP TICKETS FOR A TRAIN JOURNEY

Although The TrainLine doesn't seem to be the easiest way to buy train tickets on the internet, once you have discovered how it works you can spend a satisfying deal of time organising your trip.  One of the problems is finding out how to buy the cheaper tickets:   Here's how:

A recent correspondent has told us how she almost gave up using the service offered by our English train servers - click on the flashy train above - as she had failed miserably to find the much-vaunted 'cheap journeys'.  The secret, he tells us, is to stop worrying when the fare you want comes up and there are no little circles which relate to the proposed journey which you can click.   The only ones available seem to be the more expensive options.  Now, if you click on the cheapest one of those, you may then come to a link which suggests looking for even cheaper fares.  Look towards the top of the screen, and it is printed quite small, nothing too obvious, you understand?  We do have to make our profits, don't we?  However, if you get an option, they are usually wonderful!

There is a lot of chat about booking in advance but the best thing to do is to book with only a few days in hand, or even the very day.  The fares come down to something unbelievable!  It's worth practising to learn the system.  Click on the train above and find out!

To go hunting to buy your train tickets anywhere in the world,  [ Start here ]
