FREDA MBE CELEBRATES AGAIN
Mrs.
Freda Cheyney, MBE celebrated 70 years'
service with the British Legion at a
recent party in All Saints' Church Hall
with friends and fellow members. She
enrolled with the RBL in 1939 and was the
Standard Bearer between 1947 and
1990 and Chairman of Milford's Royal
British Legion Women's Section since 1980.
Freda also served as country standard
bearer and chairman and undertook several
official roles as a member of the Central
Committee in London. Of course,
being a member she has always been
passionately interested in raising money
for the Poppy Appeal - starting as a
collector in 1938 she eventually became
the local area organiser for the last 32
years.
As
well as her work for the RBL she involved
her work with the Girl Guides of which she
became the District Commissioner.
She started in the Guides at the age of 12
and remained in uniform, devoting
altogether 53 years of her life in the
movement. In between time, she has
also served with the other famous guides,
the GTuide Dogs for the Blind, of which
she has been treasurer since 1962.
Among her party guests was the MP for New
Forest West,
Mr. Desmond Swayne.

LIFE IN MILFORD - AN
EVERYDAY STORY OF SEASIDE FOLK
Daa-di-daa-di-daa-di-daaa . . .
'A
lifelong bachelor, Allen
Greenwood latterly divided his
time between the RAC clubhouse
at Epsom, where he kept a
room, and Milford-on-Sea,
where he had a flat in a block
otherwise largely occupied by
widows, for whom he gallantly
hosted an annual Christmas
lunch.

CLEVER MARKETING

Fairy liquid has been
repackaged - still the same pretty colour, still the
same promise of being 50% stronger - looks good.
What isn't mentioned is that there is 10% less in
the bottle. To discover this you actually have
to look for the difference and the manufacturers
know that most people don't bother so
unsurprisingly this last point is not part of the
advertising programme. Unfortunately we can't
find an old bill with the former price. If
there has been a change, do let us know. The
current price is 90p. [Click
here] to e-mail us. We might find
the manufacturers are on our side, though judging by
the cost of most washing materials recently where
prices have been leaping up we don't have much
confidence in this possibility. . .

FR. VERVENNE
CELEBRATES 40 YEARS A PRIEST

Father Vervenne, who almost
ten years ago offered to rescue the church of St.
Francis of Assisi in Milford after the retirement of
Fr. Dunne, celebrated his Ruby Jubilee yesterday at
a special Mass at the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes
in New Milton. Bishop Crispian Hollis
was present with eleven of Fr. Vervenne's priest
friends joining the congregation made up of
people from both churches together with members of
Fr. Vervenne's family who came over from Holland where he was born.
The celebration, on a lovely
sunny evening, was a joint one, shared with Rev. Mike Welch, Deacon to
both Churches. Mike, a former rugby
international, celebrated the
Silver Jubilee of his Ordination to the Permanent
Diaconate on 17th June.
We offer congratulations, our
thanks and best wishes to both of them, who have
done and continue doing a great deal for the people
of St. Francis in Milford and Our Lady of Lourdes in
New Milton.

BRITISH GOVERNMENT'S
ASPIRATIONS
The British government, which
is fighting daily battles in an attempt to restore
confidence in its ability to put failings behind it
and move forward in a new and inspiring direction,
has today announced that children in English schools
should no longer be taught the rhyme which in the
past helped many youngsters to sort out one of the
most important problems they face during their
education, namely 'I before E except after C'.
Reports from an unnamed source
indicate that this phrase is either to be put into
the Home Office Secret Files (Category TOP) or
published - strictly for viewing by teachers
- in a new publication 'Redacted Rules of English
Grammar' which will shortly be issued to be
available on the internet.

DID YOU KNOW?

Milford has an independent
pharmacy again: a new one has opened just by
the War Memorial Hospital and Milford Clinic, and
there you will see a familiar face or two! Their
telephone is easy to read on the above picture,
Other details are that they offer a full NHS
dispensing service as well as a private one.
They have a collection/delivery service and a
comprehensive range of medicines, vitamins and
health care products. They are open very long
hours, early to late, and late means 11.00 pm, 10.00
at weekends, seven days a week with free parking.
Cheers and good luck!

MILFORD SUMMER DELIGHTS
AHEAD
Milford's summer season rolls
into serious action after the curtain drops on
Wimbledon which starts on Monday and finishes on 5th
July.
Here though, starting on 9th
July and continuing to 12th July the great Milford
Music and Arts Festival will arrive with its
increasing bazazz. Details will be available
as soon as they are finalised. One item which
doesn't usually take place during the Festival is
the selection of the Carnival Queen and her
attendant. This will be happening on 11th July
at 6.00 pm's 'Milford's Got Talent' when our own
budding celebrities will have the chance to strut
their stuff: entry forms for the Carnival
Queen and her glamorous attendant are available for
Gwen's Fashions in the High Street. Hopeful
candidates must be aged 14 or above, able to sing
and/or dance, be a resident of the Parish of Milford
and available for Carnival, which as usual is on the
last Saturday in August, this year the 29th when all
the usual wonders will be available around and on
the Green including a Hog Roast - worth coming just
for the smell as it roasts in the warm summer air!
Drivers to the event, please
note that if you park in the car parks drivers will
not be able to leave Milford between 5.00 and 8.00
pm. Shame! You'll have to force yourself
to be there to be in the middle of all these
Carnival delights, entertainment, bouncy castle,
climbing wall, roundabouts, coconut shy, Punch and
Judy, - not to mention the food and hospitality of
Milford Village! Oh, it's a hard life . . .
Oh - the Music and Arts
Festival and the Carnival are only two of the events
to look forward to - there are lots of others.

MILFORD PROBUS CLUB
CELEBRATES 25th ANNIVERSARY
Two surviving founder members,
Ted Langley and Paul Pritchard of the Milford Probus
Club, with their wives Ellen and Anita were
able to celebrate the Silver Anniversary of the club
at a festive dinner at Barton Golf Club with its
present chairman Peter Harvey and his wife Sybil.
The function was attended by almost 70 members and
guests. Ocean Harmony, the local men's
barbershop singers, under their director Laurence
Prestage, provided the entertainment and the
excellent evening crowned twenty-five years of
successful and much appreciated fellowship with
Milford's own Probus Club. [

NOT WORTH DRIVERS SPEEDING
THROUGH MILFORD!
A recent speeding mother on
her way to collect her daughter from school was
caught in Milford doing 43 mph in a 30mph area was
fined £500 and given 5 points on her licence.
Mrs. Reziak will doubtless remember the wisdom of
setting out earlier when she has a deadline and
controlling that itchy foot which has a tendency to
drift down on the accelerator in an attempt to beat
the clock. Big punishment for a little
lapse? Much better than finding you've killed
someone or maimed them for life!

LUCKY TWENTY DID A GREAT
JOB

Photo - Katy Passmore
Anyone driving round the Forest - or walking even -
will have noticed the great collection of foals
around this year. Strong and pretty, they're
great and it does look as though the decision to
restrict the number of stallions in the Forest was
the right one. If you haven't seen them yet,
go, look and above all, drive carefully. Make
the most of this year, because none of the
stallions are being given their head (head?) to keep
the ladies happy for the mating season this autumn.
This is also the time of year to enjoy other young
in the Forest. There are very young donkeys as
well as Shetland ponies - the babies are much
smaller than you expect, so do watch out for them.
Can you think of much worse than finding you've run
over one? Except telling your children you did
it. . .

MOVIOLA TICKETS AVAILABLE FROM GWEN'S
Milford can now choose now whether to go out in the
evening to the Moviola presentations, or to a matinée,
since performances are now going to be held at
3.30pm and 7.30pm. Bar and coffee will be
available at both showings. There will be a
strict limit on a maximum of 70 tickets for each
session to avoid the problem of heads and to allow
more comfort to the audience as well as better
access to vision. New, comfier chairs are now
making their appearance.
The
hard-working people behind the scenes of our
Community Centre and the promoters (and workers)
behind Moviola - which is run as a charity
purely for the love of movies - ask you all to
support this venture which is very important to the
village. With petrol rising at its present rate, it
will soon become a matter of serious consideration

experience. Another £25,000 have found their

METRIC EQUIVALENTS - AND VICE VERSA

A
member of our staff was looking for a simple
conversion table recently to try to cook a duck.
He had no idea how to cook it since the recipe he
wanted to use was an older one, where the
instructions are in Imperial weights. For
cooking times, temperatures etc. he needed to find
out what to do. Most tables on the internet
seem to involve working out the maths, so we thought
people might like an easy reference table,
particularly as the geese are busy fattening
themselves up for Christmas and it might be
essential - for some reason, at some point -
to try to find out how long is a piece of string!

RENEWING YOUR VEHICLE LICENCE FROM YOUR OWN HOME

This
is a really efficient new service: we have
tested it and it works well. When your Vehicle
Licence arrives through the post it will be printed
on a form V11, which you can see at the top
right-hand corner. Underneath will be a thing
called a 'SORN'. the letter of which stand for
Statutory Off Road Notification. Armed with
this number you will be able to telephone and order
your licence or use the internet. It will be
delivered to you five days later. One small
hitch: as every opportunity for anything to do
with serving the public costs money, over and above
all our taxes, there is a charge of £2.50 to use a
debit/credit card. This is just about worth
the convenience of not having to go and queue up at
a Post Office to renew your licence. Renewal
at a Post Office will be £112.75 for 6 months and
£205.00 for a year. How come the Government
continues to insist that the rise in the cost of
living is just a fraction over 2%? Maybe they
all went to school when the education in Mathematics
in this country had sunk to an all time low!
Incidentally, Big Brother knows whether you have
paid your insurance, and whether your car is liable
to be MOT-ed, and if so, whether it has been done
and on which date it is due.

enable people to stay in their own homes as long as
possible, there's a chance it could be time for a
good little exploration to see what is on offer.

NEW LIFE FOR OLD MOBILES

The
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance is
launching a new scheme for recycling dead mobile
phones. This is an extension of an already
existing finance generating scheme which recycles
empty computer cartridges, used clothing, stamps and
shoes. Anything between £6 and £25 can be
received from mobiles no longer in use and it is
anticipated that many thousands of pounds can be
raised in this way.
All
that needs doing is to remove the SIM card and send
it off, without the charger, to:
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance
Freepost London 16281
London WC1N 3BR
Some
people may be sentimentally attached to their old
mobiles and be reluctant to dispose of them.
But if they do the little machines will be recycled
for use in the developing world, where much business
is done over the air on mobiles in places where
office
space is way out of reach.
This offers small traders the chance to make enough
profit on their labour to keep a family well-fed and
perhaps pay school fees. It also enables
traders from small villages to tap in for
information about average market prices for the
products for the day. Many small traders have
no idea how much they should charge for their goods
and are often seriously disadvantaged when it comes
to getting the right price.

SILLY QUESTION - BUT DO YOU HAVE TIME TO SPARE?

As a result of
the recent 'Who Cares' campaign, local volunteers
contributed enough money to launch the 'Volunteer
Sitting Service'. This will offer respite to those
whose lives are dedicated in their homes to looking
after people who need full time care. Oakhaven
will train volunteers who will then be enabled to
give both patients and carer a much needed break,
for up to four hours a week, in what is often a
stressful and restrictive situation.
Volunteers will not be expected to offer medical or
personal care. The main hope is that the
volunteers will be able to become visiting friends
who can brighten the lives of those who are
suffering by offering them a change, a different
point of view and a chat to someone new.
If you feel you
can offer your help in this new venture, ring Carole
on 01590 613030. Travel expenses and ongoing
training and support will be given by Oakhaven.

miserably to find the much-vaunted 'cheap
journeys'. The secret, he tells us, is to
stop worrying when the fare you want comes up
and there are no little circles which relate to
the proposed journey which you can click.
The only ones available seem to be the more
expensive options. Now, if you click on
the cheapest one of those, you may then come to
a link which suggests looking for even cheaper
fares. Look towards the top of the screen,
and it is printed quite small, nothing too
obvious, you understand? We do have to
make our profits, don't we? However, if
you get an option, they are usually wonderful!
There is a lot of chat about booking in advance but
the best thing to do is to book with only a few days
in hand, or even the very day. The fares come
down to something unbelievable! It's worth
practising to learn the system. Click on the
train above and find out!

WHEN
YOU NEED MEDICAL HELP OUT OF HOURS. . .
The new system came into effect last week. You
either ring the normal number for your surgery, when
you will be transferred, or you ring 0845 601 8803,
when a Health Care Professional will discuss your
problem, and with you, advise on the best treatment.
It's a bit like talking to NHS Direct but on a more
localised basis. We are particularly lucky in
Milford because our nearest Primary Health Trust
centre is in Lymington. 'Out of hours
times' referred to are after 6.30 pm Monday
to Friday, and before 8.00 am, and all over
the weekend.

GIVE 'EM AN ARM OR A LEG - OR SOMETHING EVEN
MORE USEFUL!

You
may have noticed a good deal of publicity recently -
and there will be more - about thinking of donating
something of you to benefit others, in the event you
have to say good-bye to this world. It could
mean you wouldn't have to be completely dead!
Seriously, a recent survey has shown that a majority
of people are in favour of donating organs, but most
either don't know how to set about it or they don't
get round to doing it. The National Donor
Organ Register has now got itself organised on the
internet, and if you
click on the logo
above you can not only
go and find out all about it, but you can also get
yourself registered.
Having looked at this site, it doesn't seem that
that many people have got round to registering
this year -
why not add your name?
Everyone in our office has finally done it!
